Under new management, the Oakhouse, Axbridge Square is now stylish, attractive and welcoming. The nine smart en-suite bedrooms provide cosy beds, all the usual mod cons and the character of ancient architecture married to designer chic.
Whether you want coffee and cake, lunch, a delicious dinner or Sunday roast, the new menu offers excellent choice, aiming for locally sourced produce and regular new dishes to tempt you. A thoughtfully designed wine list complements the chef’s hard work.
A family friendly hotel, the Oakhouse has new baby changing facilities and high chairs, and does little portions for little tums: not a chicken nugget or purple pea in sight!
The Function Room can cater for up to 60 people and is an ideal place for weddings, parties and other special occasions: just phone to find out more, or to book a meal or room.

Run by The King of Breakfast and Brunch, Paul Hartley, and his wife Lynda, you’ll be expecting a great breakfast and you won’t be disappointed. All day, Tues-Sun you can enjoy full English, a bacon sandwich, eggs Benedict, morning mushrooms, a fruit croissant or mouth watering smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.
But Hartley’s Kitchen doesn’t stop at breakfast! There’s a full lunch menu with gorgeous puddings and cakes, a gurgling coffee maker, and an Aladdin’s cave of a freezer. Inside you’ll find some of the best prepared meals we’ve seen. The list is too long to record, but as an example do you fancy lamb? If so choose from lamb tagine, lamb rhogan josh, lamb dhansak and moussaka.
If you are entertaining, Hartley’s Kitchen will cook for you ready for you to collect and serve – even using your own dishes if you like. For events they will cook and serve their renowned curry, Moroccan and exotic buffets for private and corporate clients.
If you’ve ever wondered how it’s all made, why not come along to one of the Monday cookery schools? Cook your own lunch and take home dinner for two plus all the recipe cards.

When I moved to Somerset 15 years ago one of the few things I missed from the smoke was a decent curry house. God must have heard my prayers, because a year later Russel and Hussain opened Cheddar Cottage.
From the outset they offered a warm welcome, a chilled pint of Kingfisher and the usual range of Indian dishes we all know and love, plus unique Bangladeshi creations with exotic fruit, coconut milk and fragrant spices. This proved to be a winning formula that has stood the test of time and I’m pleased to say my favourite, Tatula, is still on the menu, alongside a choice of 7 other Bangladeshi specialities, including the popular Nagajal.
Visit on a Wednesday and you can enjoy a special banquet meal with mixed starter, choice of main and rice for just £9.95.

This little restaurant is surely Cheddar’s most precious undiscovered treasure.
Run by husband and wife team Frank and Sue Farrell, the atmosphere is relaxed yet formal and the service second to none.
The food is cooked to perfection and has a modern French influence. An imaginative use of local seasonal produce pervades throughout the menu – the vegetables in particular are exceptional.
We recommend the lunch menu, with set prices for 1, 2 or 3 courses it represents excellent value for money and is the perfect way to liven up a winter’s day. The menu changes every few weeks, so you can go back time and time again.

In just 3 months, new head chef Joe Sims has established The Galleries as one of the food pubs of the area and we are sure this it’s reputation will continue to grow. The combination of reasonably priced, restaurant quality food in an informal pub atmosphere is sure to be popular with locals and visitors alike.
Local sourcing is very important to owners Karyn and Paul Sturmey, all the beef and free-range chicken comes from Priddy Good Meat and the fish is from a local fisherman.
Vegetarians are extremely well catered for, with 5 innovative choices on the standard menu and daily specials too. All the sauces, relishes and marmalades are made in house, so the staff have excellent knowledge of the ingredients and their provenance. Most dishes can be adapted to suit vegans too.
Children and dogs (in designated area) are welcome, the Captain Jack Flint’s children’s’ menu is thoughtful, healthy and fun.

This pub has become known as ‘The best little food pub in Cheddar’ and we’d be hard pressed to disagree. It’s everything a village pub should be - a real pub, with a real fire and real food.
The menu features traditional pub favourites - the homemade pies are very popular - but it’s the exotic meat that has become a trademark. Think medallions of wild boar, kangaroo kebabs and crocodile steaks! If these don’t whet your appetite, how about the Cornish catch of the day? When we visited there was a choice of baby Dover sole, butterflied mackerel and Moroccan shark tagine.
Children and dogs are most welcome and can chose from the healthy Mini Diggers and Doggy (yes doggy!) menus, not a chip in sight!

Combine the best influences from Italy – gelati, Illy Coffee, bubbly, confident service and unmistakable style – with one of the most quirky shopping streets in Somerset – and the biggest question will be ‘to shop first or to eat and drink first?’
At Café La Strada you will be assured of a warm welcome and bustling yet intimate atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy a selection of handmade ciabatta, such as brie and caramelised onions, pastries – beware the Spanish almond cake will possess you! - and La Strada’s own Senso Ice Cream, with a perfect cup of coffee, Tea Pigs tea or perhaps a smoothie of the day.
Emporio La Strada continues the theme with wonderful food and delightful kitchenware; think Selfridges with an artisan twist and a Somerset smile. Italian panettone alongside aromatic jelly, minimalist Alessi design alongside traditional wicker hampers; a combination that reflects the style, passion and imagination of the owners themselves. |

From the lock side it’s hard to fully appreciate the position of The Lockhouse, but step down into the listed bar area and your eyes will be drawn to the glass extension and terrace beyond. Immerse yourself in another world for any occasion from a leisurely lunch to a formal evening meal as you sit and watch the boats go by, amid stunning views of Bristol docks and the Welsh coastline, especially romantic at night when distant lights twinkle.
Conscious of the restaurant’s role in the community, Gordon Ramsay trained chef Richard Gynn put the contemporary British menu together using fresh local produce wherever possible.
The lunch and evening menus change seasonally; when we visited lunch featured white onion risotto, duck confit, mushroom and spinach mille fuille. The evening a la carte menu offers a good choice of fish from red mullet to roasted brill and the best of local meat cooked imaginatively, such as Sheepway pork belly with parsnip puree and fillet of beef with braised ox tongue. Leave room for a little something from the tempting array of desserts. The chefs are happy to cater specially for any specific dietary requirements.

Regular customers of Delicious say they feel like part of the family. Viv and Mandy happily chat knowledgeably about all the products they sell, whilst serving a wonderful cup of Illy coffee or Miles tea, that just begs for a slice of one of the tempting homemade cakes, such as Somerset apple cake or French and flourless chocolate cake.
The daily specials board features fresh soup, pasta, pies, paninis and sandwiches, all made on site and available to eat-in or takeaway. On the day we visited Spaghetti with clams and risotto with mushrooms, thyme and pecorino cheese were very popular.
The deli is an emporium of local and unusual treasures, Burcott Mill organic flour, Valley Smoke House Salmon, Wootton Organic Sheep Cheeses and Chilli Chocolate tapenade to name but a few. Gluten free items are a speciality.

Almost as much a part of Shepton Mallet as the viaduct up the road, Blostins has been owned and run by Nick and Lynne Reed for 23 years.
Its winning formula is remains as it was on the opening night, great seasonal fresh food, cooked to order and served in an informal bistro atmosphere. Fish soup is a speciality, but the crispy duck comes equally recommended.
The reasonably priced 2 and 3 course meals make Blostins affordable for everyday eating out, and whilst not setting out to be an occasion restaurant, the personal service and a la carte specials ensure it meets the grade when called for. 12 years ago they bought the cottage next door and knocked through, doubling the dining space and creating a room that can be used for private dining.

Described as a ‘restaurant with rooms’, Bowlish House is an elegant grade II listed Georgian house; grand without being intimidating, and formal, yet relaxed.
Book a table here and it’s yours for the evening, though you may wish to take coffee in the comfortable and homely lounge. Modern British and European in style, the food is sourced from the West Country where possible, including local meat and vegetables and fresh fish from Devon.
Recent a la carte choices, added alongside the longstanding 3 and 6 course fixed price options, are perfect for lunch or a lighter evening meal, and the house makes an unusual venue for morning coffee and cake. |

The chilled counter at Peppers is a trip around the world in 80 dishes!
Choose from Greek staples, Far Eastern treats and Italian specialities, including houmous, falafels, samosas, fresh salads, rustic tarts and even a good old Homity pie.
There is a good selection of wholefoods, special dietary needs are catered for and a full range of Ecover products are stocked. Although the emphasis is on healthy eating, the homemade cakes are hard to resist too!
The café is deceptively spacious, with plenty of room for buggies or wheel chairs. The pasta choices would not disgrace a café in Italy, and the menu is as varied as that in the deli, with specials including Thai Curry and Moroccan Lamb. We love the fact that all the meals can be served with a selection of the freshly made salads from the deli.

If you eat at the same place 4 or 5 times a week then it goes without saying that the food has to suit you. Ian Jarmaine, landlord of The Swan, is no exception to this rule. A strict vegetarian, he soon tires of the same 2 or 3 dishes served in most pubs and restaurants and has set out to make his own pub different. Hence this unexpected location for surprisingly good vegetarian pub food, much of it cooked with the meat replacement Quorn.
Not that the menu is totally vegetarian – lamb shanks and pork stroganoff are amongst the most popular dishes, and the steak pie is so good one visitor enjoyed it for both lunch and dinner!
Still a traditional real ale pub, serving Matthews Bob Wall and other local ales, but also offering business breakfasts and accommodation, The Swan has worked hard recently to re-brand itself, including becoming the 1st pub to be awarded the ‘safer socialising’ status, resulting partly form its no-tolerance approach.

Think of a Harvest Festival showcase every day – a bakery counter with a wonderful array of signature spelt products, a butcher’s counter with a range of top-quality organic meats including rare breeds from Sharpham Farm and a fine selection of the best local and seasonal organic food products from a 50 mile radius.
It’s just a step, literally and metaphorically, to The Harlequin Organic Café, where you can relax and enjoy a menu inspired by the seasonal and local and produce sold in the shop. We recommend the famous Sharpham Park 'Speltotto' range of ‘risottos’ made from spelt instead of rice, aptly named by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstal and the White Park burger, from their eponymous cattle.
Add weekly recipe suggestions, tastings, cookery classes and opportunities to meet the producers and Kilver Court is so much more than a food destination, it’s truly a food experience. Paul Burton, the butcher sums the whole approach “food is not just something to be consumed, responsible and sustainable production is key to the health of the individual, the local economy and the environment”.

The Castle Hotel is one of the top 40 restaurants in Britain, earning the accolade for Head Chef Richard Guest’s outstanding British food, inspired by his infectious passion for Somerset produce, fully supported by the family owners.
Richard describes himself as a passionate tradesman who loves to work with the best raw materials; the seasonal menus, based on the very best West Country ingredients reflect that passion. The a la carte menu features smoked eels from Brown and Forrest, served with scrambled duck egg and spiced oil, saddle of rabbit and the ever-popular slow roast duck that is cooked to perfection with delectable crispy skin and meat that melts in the mouth.
Richard constantly tries hard to raise the standard and works closely with his suppliers. Look out for ‘awesome’ raspberries,as well as perfect plums and cherries this Summer.
The Classic British menu, with main courses at just £10 and starters and desserts at £5 does not compromise on ingredient quality, but offers simpler dishes using the same top quality ingredients. See the website for daily specials that will tempt you to visit every day! Slow roast saddle of pork, calves liver with bacon, Cornish fish stew, rabbit faggots or one of Richard’s own favourites – fish and chips

Nestled in a gentle Quantock valley, hidden by the working farm it is at the heart of, Clavelshay Barn is a Somerset jewel that we want to tell the world about, yet paradoxically we’d also like to keep to ourselves.
The 18th century stone barn has been sympathetically restored, with traditional oak flooring sourced from the farm, and the original elm beams. The modern country feel is airy yet intimate, relaxed yet unmistakeably special; equally suitable for a romantic dinner for two, a family celebration or a unique wedding venue for 100.
Head chef Guy Horley echoes the atmosphere with the food he creates for a menu that changes every month, making use of the best local seasonal ingredients. Most dishes have an imaginative contemporary twist, perhaps none more so than the delicious pan seared scallop sausage on wilted baby spinach with a lime and truffle beurre blanc. I brought back childhood memories with Clavelshay rabbit braised with olives, tomatoes and rosemary on bubble and squeak, whilst my husband tucked into perfectly cooked local rib eye steak with garlic sautéed potatoes.
After delicate rhubarb and ginger crème brulee and some of the best Somerset cheese around we felt very relaxed indeed leaving only on the understanding that we’d be back soon.

It would be easy to rely on the journalists who have recently referred to The Old Spot as ‘The Hot Spot’, ‘Spot On’ and ‘utterly brilliant’ - all worthy praise indeed - but for me the unsolicited recommendations from no less than three of the chefs I most respect in Wells was the real key to the quality of the food in this unassuming restaurant.
Ian Bates describes his cooking as down-to-earth and straightforward, with the ambience being that of a local neighbourhood restaurant. The latter is certainly true, but how many neighbourhood restaurants can boast a spectacular cathedral view?
The menu changes weekly, making use of the best seasonal local produce, always offers something interesting as well as straightforward and demonstrates the skills and repertoire that Ian has amassed since his days at Bibendum.

Firmly established as the best place to enjoy top quality coffee in Wells, Pickwicks is much more than a coffee shop. The deceptively large café has a choice of seating from bustling window tables to comfy leather sofas tucked around the corner, hidden from the outside world. The walls are adorned with photography and paintings from Pennybatch gallery, all available to purchase.
The professional staff delicately balance efficient service with an unhurried feel, so that customers know they are equally welcome to pop in for a quick coffee or stay as long as they like.
The menu has a wide range of sandwiches, baguettes and panninis, all freshly made to order. Hot choices include jacket potatoes, locally produced chilli, traditional farmhouse hotpot and fresh premium soup of the day.
Take advantage of the new drinks license to enjoy Butcombe Beer, Bath Ales, Orchard Pig cider or choose from the impressive wine list.
Pickwicks are open 7 days of the week, and all items except hot main dishes are available to take away.

How should we start to describe this traditional British pub that was originally the city jail? With the 7 real ales all perfectly served; a phrase often used, but rarely as true as at The City Arms, the only Wells pub in the Camra guide and with Casque Marque accreditation? Or with the historical courtyard and spectacular first floor restaurant with its high ceilings and original oak beams? Or maybe the subtle feminine touches put in place by the new landlady, Penny Lee.
All of these are reasons enough to visit, but the tempting menus and sight of other diners will surely make you want to stay and eat.
The specials change weekly and reflect the both traditional British dishes that the pub is known for, and the Southern Mediterranean interest of Head Chef Adam Kennington. On our visit the choices ranged from fresh whole rainbow trout and chicken with BBQ sauce to Greek salad of feta cheese, olives, peppers & red onions and deep fried calamari rings with a sweet chilli dip.

Tastefully decorated with rich, orange paintings complimenting minimalist furniture, it would be hard to pin down the style of the food served at Café Romna if you glanced in through the window; but step through the door and the warm, spicy aromas of Indian cooking leave you in no doubt.
The menu lists all the Indian favourites alongside Romna specials ranging from home-cooked Indian dishes such as Maas Ori, with flash fried Bangladeshi Boowal fish to fusion creations such as char-grilled pheasant with a spicy lime sauce.
The atmosphere is intimate enough for couples, but open enough for parties, ranging in size from large tables to full restaurant bookings, be they business gatherings or celebrations for families and friends. Call to discuss your requirements.

Once through the door of this back-alley gem, you could be in a New Orleans jazz bar, complete with pictures of great musicians such as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and a fantastic grand piano.
Visit in the morning to spread out your papers and relax over a traditional English fry-up, with Bucks Fizz on Sundays, enjoy simple, honest pub-style food at lunchtime, or make an evening of it, with the rare combination of excellent live music and good food. The rack of lamb and ever-changing medley of fish are always popular, but we also recommend chef’s specials such as scallops au gratin or roasted guinea fowl.
The music style varies, from sax and piano players to the rat-pack mix sung by Michael Carter, one of the 4 Carter family members who run the café. Bizarely 3 unrelated Carters also work here!

The atmospheric restaurant in the 13th century Undercroft at The Bishop’s Palace is truly a unique venue.
Head chef Steve Childs has developed a range of menus for wedding receptions, family celebrations, fundraising events and corporate functions, all with a strong emphasis on fresh seasonal home cooked food sourced from local producers.
The series of special a la carte nights are very popular, a great opportunity to enjoy fine dining amid beautiful surroundings.
The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens are open daily from Easter to Christmas and the restaurant serves morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea on these days. We recommend a relaxed Sunday lunch, followed by an afternoon stroll in the peaceful gardens where one can marvel over the architecture and enjoy the tranquillity.

Those who like The Riverside in Cheddar, with its inventive menu, bright restaurant, welcoming bars and friendly service, will love the transformation at The Sherston. It’s a winning formula that has worked well for Huw Davies and his team, so he has taken much of it with him to his new venture. The atmosphere is modern, yet cosy, with contemporary décor and a roaring fire in the restaurant.
The menu has something for everyone including fresh fish, great steaks, and lighter options such as salads, olives and Greek meze.
The childrens menu is exceptional, and sure to please both parent child, whether the choice is mini tapas for a toddler, pork sausages with veggie mash, homemade Yorkshire pudding and gravy for those who love something familiar, sweet and sour vegetables with rice for the more adventurous or even 5oz rump steak for those with a bigger appetite. We did spot a mistake though, shouldn’t the banana and strawberry kebab be on the adult menu?!

If you’re looking for a traditional British pub, with a warm welcome and good homely food, just a stone throw from the bustle of Wells, then the Bull Terrier is for you. For interest, add in some of history; with a license granted in 1612, the pub is truly one of Somerset’s oldest.
Landlord Barry Vidler is passionate about his real ales, Butcombe is always available, plus there are 3 guest beers, changing regularly and often sourced from local brewers. You may find Barry’s personal favourites from around the UK, such as Adnam’s from Suffolk too. Traditional ciders, Thatcher’s Gold and Red are popular with locals and visitors alike.
“We think of ourselves as a pub that does good food” says Barry’s wife, Ruth, who cooks for her customers the favourites her family have always enjoyed at home, including local steaks, the ever-popular lamb steak and Sunday Roasts. Vegetarians and those with dietary restrictions are well catered for with a choice of 5 dishes; try the lasagne with lentils, the vegan vegetable curry or the mushroom and cashew curry made with no cheese or butter.

In the pretty village of Croscombe, midway between Wells and Shepton Mallet, stands this 17th century Inn, a CAMRA and Good Pub Guide award-winning pub, renown for good food, real ales and always a friendly welcome.
The popular bar area reveals a traditional log fire, the George’s own exclusive cask beer and comfy seating; alongside stained glass by Somerset’s noted John Yeo, family photos, art, and memorabilia that reflect a broader life. These influences are also present in the range and creativity of the cooking. Cast an eye over the thoughtful menu, and if it doesn’t immediately tell you why the George is a popular destination food pub, then the aroma coming from the kitchen, the look of the food, and the satisfied customers will leave you in no doubt.
True to a proper country pub, trained-chef Veryan sources food from her own garden, neighbours, local farmers, and small scale family producers. The menu features traditional and contemporary British dishes, all homemade on site. Steak and Ale Pie, handcut chips, and Veryan’s rich ice creams are the most popular items; but alongside favourites like local sirloin or organic rump steak you can also find Gressingham duck breast, Cornish scallops, turbot or lemon sole, and classic desserts like crème brulee, sticky toffee pudding, and blackberry and apple crumble. You can even get real Canadian maple syrup for your pudding, or proper fair-trade Italian espresso coffee for afters.
There is plenty of space to eat in the restaurant, the bar, the old tack room (perfect for families) or the snug, and in the beautiful landscaped garden with covered terrace you can eat and relax and look up to the church spire. Both children and dogs are welcome!
The last Thursday of every month is Curry Night, when the George serves a buffet of Thai curry, two Asian meat curries, an Indonesian fish or seafood curry and a Bengali vegetarian curry. Steak and Chips Night on the second Wednesday of every month is another popular event, with two meals for £20.

For us Papas Fish and Chip Restaurant sums up everything we love about Weston super Mare – down to earth, hard-working people who really love what they do. “We’re just honest people doing what we believe is right to make sure our customers enjoy themselves,” says Adam Papas.
Adam doesn’t actively seek praise, but his restaurant has won unsolicited awards from organisations as diverse as Bristol Radio and The Good Eating Guide. We certainly recommend the traditional cod and chips, fresh daily, but we also love the skate and the delicious homemade fish cakes.
The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, yet bustling, and appeals to a wide range of customers of all ages, with many regulars who appreciate the combination of personal service and good food. This is reflected in the fact that whilst most customers enjoy a hot cup of tea with their meal, there is also a good choice of wines on offer.
Papas is one of the few places I’d be equally happy to eat with Grandma and the children as with a business contact. Before or after the theatre, respite from a shopping trip or after a bracing walk along the seafront, Papas fits the bill perfectly.
Behind the scenes the kitchens are spotless, worthy of the 5 star scores on the doors awarded by North Somerset Council, reflecting the hardworking ethos that pervades.
