Predictions for 2010
What the experts think
At a recent CIM Food and Drink seminar some of the region's experts shared their predictions for the industry in 2010.
John Sheaves - Taste of the West
This year will be challenging, with very difficult trading conditions. We need to get the election out of the way before things can move on. After that I worry about unemployment.
That said, the food marketplace is still looking for quality, integrity and provenance. Research shows consumers are still supporting ethical values. The average shopper is getting more sophisticated, trading down in some areas, but trading up in others.
Marcus Carter - Founder of Virtual Farmers Market
I have only been in business 3 weeks, but I'm glad I didn't start 12 months ago. I'm hopeful for this year. For us it's promising to be a very exciting 12 months.
Mark Taylor - Director Dairy Crest
Topline growth will be very hard won. I do not believe there will be any inflation or organic growth. Cost control will remin a massive focus. My advice for small businesses is to try and protect your advertising and promotion budgets and your NPD.
Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones - The Black Farmer
The climate is still extremely challenging. Whatever the Government say, the recession is not over. But on the plus side, food treats are important and will remain so. Also people definitely want to cook more.
